Our last hurrah at The O&P!

Quizmaster Trivia UK was back this week at The Owl & Pussycat in Shoreditch, for another evening of fun drinking and thinking in East London...

And with 11 teams of 43 players in the house, it was another busy evening of Quizmaster bringing people in to play our challenging and exciting pub quiz!

Our quiz this week was hosted by Quizmaster UK partner Sam and new trainee Quizmaster Jamie. We're expanding people!

And we saw the return of many of our regular Quizmaster teams, including Free Egg and The Pussy Galores (pictured below)

Other quiz regulars Quiz Latifah ran away with our Best Team Name prize, taking a £10 bar tab for the accolade.

We saw the return of I voted yes in the referendum, am I worse than Islamic State? The trio won second place with a score of 42 points, taking a £20 bar tab.

Finally, our champions - returning for the third week in the row - was It doesn't matter, I'll fuck it anyway. The team returned with actor David Cross, winning with a score of 43 points.

Unfortunately, the management have decided to go in a different direction, so Quizmaster's last hurrah at The Owl & Pussycat was this past Tuesday. Please check out the schedule to see where else you can get your Quizmaster fix from now on.

Article of the Week - Fabergé egg

A Fabergé egg (Russian: Яйца Фаберже; Yaĭtsa Faberzhe) is any one of the thousands of jeweled eggs made by the House of Fabergé from 1885 to 1917. Most were miniature eggs that were popular gifts at Eastertide. They were worn on a neck chain either singly or in groups.

The most famous eggs produced by the House were the larger ones made for Alexander III and Nicholas II of Russia; these are often referred to as the 'Imperial' Fabergé eggs. Of the 50 made, 42 have survived. A further two eggs, the Constellation and Karelian Birch eggs, were planned for 1918 but not delivered, as Nicholas II and his family were assassinated that year, and Nicholas had abdicated the crown the year before.

Seven large eggs were made for the Kelch family of Moscow.

The eggs are made of precious metals or hard stones decorated with combinations of enamel and gem stones. The Fabergé egg has become a symbol of luxury, and the eggs are regarded as masterpieces of the jeweler's art.

'Fabergé egg' typically refers to products made by the company before the 1917 Revolution, but use of the Fabergé name has occasionally been disputed, and the trademark has been sold several times since the Fabergé family left Russia after 1917 (see House of Fabergé), so several companies have subsequently retailed egg-related merchandise using the Fabergé name. The trademark is currently owned by Fabergé Limited, which also makes egg-themed jewellery.

Pub Quizzin' with JON HAMM.

It was a very special evening at The Owl & Pussycat for Quizmaster Trivia UK this week as actor Jon Hamm took part in our pub quiz in East London.

Hamm, best known for playing the lead role of Don Draper on TV's Mad Men was in London filming and decided to take part in our quiz! Friend David Cross (who featured in last week's quiz) returned for more quiz action and brought along Jon to get a taste of Quizmaster and drink a few old fashioned's.

Plus it was a great night to try and blend in with the crowd, as a total of 54 players gathered to compete for prizes at our trivia night...
It was a record attendance this past Tuesday at The Owl & Pussycat, with over 50 players at our Pub Quiz.

We also had the likes of Amber Tamblyn and Sharon Horgan feature on Jon Hamm's team...

Jon and his team entered their quiz sheet in at the end of the game with the team name 'Mad Men pulling Todd Margaret's pants down.'

And Quizmaster Sam was especially excited to meet Jon Hamm, as he's a big fan of Mad Men and his work.

And we had plenty of teams in the building who recognised the american actor, who tried their very best to contain their excitement and just think of a cool Mad Men inspired team name...

Most notably, The Don Rapers who finished as our quiz victors with a score of 43 points! Congrats people. The team won a £30 bar tab! And as he scored their sheet and found their team name rather amusing, Mr Don Draper himself kindly stepped in for the photo,

Elsewhere on the evening, we had a sudden death for our second place prize as Free Egg (New Ketch) and The most original team name both tied on a solid 41 points!

So we posed the following sudden death question to round up the evening: A record set by Hungary during the 1954 tournament, what is the record number of goals scored by a single team during a FIFA World Cup?

Free Egg (New Ketch) answered: 22
The most original team name answered: 9

The answer was 27! Leading Free Egg (New Ketch) to quizzical victory. Hooray!
The trio won a £20 bar tab...

A range of teams provided stiff competition for the coveted Best Team Name prize, rewarding contestants with a £10 bar tab. But ultimately, the people's choice was Spandau Bollocks. Good job people, you deserve every penny of that tenner.

Finally, team Clueless quickly grabbed a picture as they sat in awe of Jon Hamm's magnificent presence.

What a guy.

That's all folks! We return next week at 8pm with another eventful evening of trivia and celebrities for you - with rumour that The Queen might be popping in for a pint of Guinness and a bit of trivia.

Until next time London, drink while you think...

Article of the Week - Numbers in Chinese Culture

In Chinese tradition, certain numbers are believed by some to be auspicious or inauspicious based on the Chinese word that the number name sounds similar to. The numbers 0, 6, 8, and 9 are believed to have auspicious meanings because their names sound similar to words that have positive meanings.

Number 4 is considered an unlucky number in Chinese because it is nearly homophonous to the word "death". Due to that, many numbered product lines skip the "4": e.g., Nokia cell phones (there is no series beginning with a 4), Palm PDAs, Canon PowerShot G's series (after G3 goes G5), etc. In East Asia, some buildings do not have a 4th floor. (Compare with the Western practice of some buildings not having a 13th floor because 13 is considered unlucky.) In Hong Kong, some high-rise residential buildings omit all floor numbers with "4", e.g., 4, 14, 24, 34 and all 40–49 floors, in addition to not having a 13th floor. As a result, a building whose highest floor is number 50 may actually have only 35 physical floors.

Singaporean public transport operator SBS Transit has omitted the number plates for some of its buses whose numbers end with '4' due to this, so if a bus is registered as SBS***3*, SBS***4* will be omitted and the next bus to be registered will be SBS***5*. Note that this only applies to certain buses and not others and that the final asterisk is a checksum letter and not a number. Another Singaporean public transport operator SMRT has omitted the '4' as the first digit of the serial number of the train cars as well as the SMRT Buses NightRider services.
